U.S. veterans who are suffering from chronic back pain are more at risk for committing suicide, research shows. The research underscores the importance of getting great, immediate care in cases where back pain is a concerned. Inability to manage back pain in veterans could elevate the risk of suicide.

Psychogenic pain, migraines and chronic back pain were all shown to elevate suicide risks in U.S. veterans. Data collected on 4,863,036 patients being treated through the VA system were collected and evaluated. Records were examined between 2004 and 2005. Researchers then evaluated the medical records of veterans suffering from back pain who committed suicide between 2005 and 2008.

Of the 1.1 million people that were diagnosed with the condition in 2005, 5,000 of them committed suicide. Back pain was shown to increase suicide risks by 13 percent. Many patients make the mistake of waiting too late to seek resolution for their chronic back pain problems. Trained physical therapists can create a treatment plan that can leave the patient feeling much better after beginning a regimen. The person does not have to live with back pain; there are endless options available for treatment.
