I comment: SUMS Doctor

I am really pissed off with one of our faculty (consultant doctor) yesterday afternoon. This is the scenario. Opppps, before that, let me disclose that doc’s name as MAGDA.

Last Wednesday, Jan. 27 was supposed to be Magda’s last day to have a class with us in Medical Physiology. However, since she haven’t given us a long exam yet [a long exam usually a chapter exam of previously discussed chapters; usually covering 3-4 chapters], she opted to steal an hour from our lunchbreak (Jan. 29) to have us an exam today. We asked her if she could give us an exam on different schedule which is convenient for us and to her also like Saturdays or the next Med. Physio scheduled class. She refused. She insisted to have it on Friday. We didn’t have had any choice. So we just studied and prepared for the 3-chapter exam. Smiley

However, at around 9:00 AM on Friday, she sent us a message telling some more key points to be studied which would be included in the exam. The whole class was freakinly cramming to cope with those, if am not mistaken, 7 topics she added. The exam was supposed to be at 12:30 and we still had a laboratory class at 9:00 – 10:00 AM and a CPC (Clinico-Pathologic Conference) at 10:30 AM until 12:00 NN. Who do you think could study 7 more topics in a very minimal time left, I guess, just an hour?

At around 11:30 AM, we were informed that the exam was moved an hour, so must be at 1:30 PM. As a student, we were bouncy enough to have that 1 hour extra time to study those added topics. By 1:30 PM, Magda didn’t arrive yet. She arrived at 2:00 PM, as she said, according to her watch though ours are 15-minute advance, the exam would only be done an hour. We took the exam. While taking it, she used to talk. We were totally irked. Smiley “The exam is only an-hour exam. If you do not know the answer, skip to the next number. Don’t stay at one number only. Start the essay first. That’s easy. You might forget that..blah blah blah”, snobbingly uttered by Magda. These statements were not stated once at a time, but she slowly and somehow clearly telling us these sentence by sentence, each every after 3 or a minute more. She only stopped talking when her mobile phone rang loudly like the whole room, even the slightest edge have heard it. What made us even more pissed during the exam was that she was talking/answering the phone inside our room while we were having a class.

Turn off your mobile phone when inside the classroom; may it be a class, a CPC, a Medical Update or any events..
This is what the dean and other doctors in SUMS has always been reminding us. And for the doctors as faculty members, they must be a model to us (as per my opinion) and for them to be respected, they must do their part. I am not telling I need their respect, but we were always been told to act decently since we are already post graduate folks and especially a medical students (sooner or later, people-our patients would be looking after us) yet it happen that Magda showed a different act.
Even more, while the exam was going on and she just finished talking with someone in her mobile phone, she told us that we only had 10 minutes left to finish the exam yet we still have, more or less 20 minutes. One of our classmates argued but she insisted to follow her clock. That was a big debate, indeed.
And the worst thing? We took an UNDISCUSSED EXAM. We were all shocked with the exam. Even if to check in Guyton’s Medical Physiology Book, no one could ever find PHARMACOLOGY, WHIPPLE’S TRIAD, KARYOTYPE and more on the chapters concerning ENDOCRINE SYSTEM and even on the Medical Physiology book itself.

Mouth zipped. Stop me!

Wow, that is a shocker indeed to have that exam under those circumstances. And to think she was using the phone is even more annoying on top of that. I understand why you would be upset about this.

Oh my, let me hate Magda for you. I am sure that she repetitively told those statements every 3 minutes or so for you were able to memorize them. Tsk tsk tsk… Those were those types of persons who wanted to be looked up for their degree, but shall be looked down for their attitude.

    David,
When you end up having a bad professor don't just leave bad reviews of them at the end of the semester. Go over to ratemyprofessors.com and let the world know what this teacher is really like. BTW, hope you did good on the test inspite of everything.

On a personal note, I am interested in exchanging links with you from my medical blog (medicalnoise.wordpress.com) over to this website. Let me know how you want to be linked and I can get you listed in a few days.

On a business note, I know the owner over at JRS Medical and was wondering if they could get listed in this blog under a category like Medical Resources or something like that for a fee? I’m sure they would be open to a blog post reviewing their website or some of their products too? They can pay you by PayPal for your trouble.

Let me know if you’re interested in either. Look forward to hearing back from you.

Be well and do good work,
    Jason
