RN to MSN Online

So you want to be a nurse. Congratulations! Maybe you’re already working in the healthcare field or you just recently started thinking about a career change. No matter what your work history might be, it’s possible to jump into the world of nursing and launch a successful, fulfilling career. Before you decide to start working on your RN to MSN online, though, there are a few things that you need to consider.

First off, nurses need to be compassionate. Before you head back to school and begin learning about the world of nursing, you need to ask yourself if you’re able to be compassionate when it comes to understanding the pain that others feel. You’re going to meet many people who are struggling both physically and emotionally, so you need to be able to demonstrate understanding toward those patients.

Nurses also need to be patient. There will be days when you come home from work feeling fulfilled and like you made a huge difference in the world. There will also be days, though, when you feel like you’re going to pass out from exhaustion. There will be days when your patients don’t stop complaining. There will be days when you feel like you can’t get anything right. It’s on those days that you need patience. You’ll need to demonstrate patience toward the people that you’re treating, but you’ll also need to demonstrate patience with yourself.

Finally, as a nurse, you’ll need to be flexible. Most nurses have semi-regular hours. If you opt to work in a physician’s office or billing department, you can almost guarantee that you’ll be home in time for dinner. If you choose to work in a hospital setting, however, or you decide to work overseas, your schedule could be a bit more random. Even if you do opt for an office job, there could be days when you have to stay late or take after-hours calls from patients who have questions. Before you become a nurse, make sure that you’re willing to be flexible for your patients when you need to be. While working long hours might not sound like fun, the truth is that it’s an incredibly valuable way to contribute to your community.
