You lay there, unconscious, while the surgeon and his team work their magic, and when you wake up, the problem is hopefully resolved. Recovery can take anywhere from a matter of days to weeks to long months, depending on what type of surgery you required, and it can be frustrating for patients who were active before and suddenly find their activity curtailed. The good news? With some diligence and good sense, you can speed up recovery and get back out into the world.

  • Go in healthy. If you know you have surgery months in advance, consider taking the time to get yourself into better shape. The healthier you are going in, the easier it will be for your body to heal after.
  • Get plenty of rest. It might sound like advice you can just shrug off, but you truly need to take care that you are resting and sleeping enough.
