Red Man Syndrome

Every time I hear “Red Man Syndrome“, and perhaps all medical professionals, there’s nothing that almost always pops out from my mind but the antibiotic Vancomycin.

Yes! Vancomycin causes Red Man Syndrome.

Red Man Syndrome is a manifestation of the reaction of the body when vancomycin is not cautiously administered. Vancomycin should be administered to patient at a maximum rate of 10 mg/minute for doses >500 mg IV. However, a concentrated or a dosage more than the previously mentioned will cause pain, thrombophlebitis and redness of the skin to the patient. Hence the term, Red Man Syndrome.
