What changes do you want to see in health care system and in medical school?

One of the essay questions that was raised up in our class discussion was What changes do you want to see in health care system and in medical school? in the country. And here below were my thoughts.

Sadly, health is not our country’s priority when it comes to budget – finances. There are still so many places, towns and barrios that need qualified doctors and quality medicines and vaccines, but because the country’s health budget is not enough to fund all the medical needs, many still are not able to afford to go to hospitals or visit, even trust their community doctors to heal them. The government should look into the real situation in the grassroots community as they are the populace that needs the most help. Medicine should be made affordable to every person or family. Public health insurance must implement universal coverage, not just covering for selected families (due to political constraints).

Services in government hospitals must also be improved. Modern and updated hospital equipment must be readily available for use, medicines should also be afforded to those who are not able to pay, and physicians must be well-compensated, there should be more incentives and benefits to keep qualified and good doctors from leaving the country and serving other people instead of their fellow countrymen. There is also a need to improve our public health services. Rural health units should offer complete immunization for children, targeting those in the remote areas and the indigents. Public health officials and workers must also help educate communities and families regarding health and hygiene and population concerns.

The number of students enrolling in medical schools is dwindling. The government should also look into this. Aside from private medical schools, local government agencies can offer scholarship programs to train or send deserving students to medical schools, especially those from the remote areas and when they graduate and eventually become doctors in the future, they can go back to their community and serve their people. Because the government has overlooked this sad situation, many doctors have become nurses and are now working abroad, that instead of giving healing here, they are extending help to races that of not their own. The government must offer effective programs, give timely benefits to prevent the brain drain.

There are so many concerns, so many changes that I want to see, but if our government does not do anything about to create changes, then all these will be in vain. We all want the ideals, we all want improvement, but if not all that is seated in higher positions will not listen and implement acts, then all these changes that we want will not truly take place. People need to see laws, rules and regulations implemented, projects to help improve their living, to have access to health care systems at any time, they need to have this. If the government can only make reliable and effective health programs for the people, then many people will be satisfied.

I just hope that in the coming years, some of these changes that I want to see and happen will take effect and will really take place. Being a developing country doesn’t have to be an excuse not to be able to provide better services especially in the health and medical system in our country.
